740 GMAT, 18 months work ex

by gunner711 » Sun Nov 18, 2012 7:51 pm
Hello Sir/ Madam,

I gave the GMAT yesterday, and got a 740. Very happy! :D
I am from India, working in the IT industry. (Not a services based company though, and the company I work for is known for making the best business solutions in the world). And, I have full UG scores. (I was the topper of my University)
I have been working here for around 18 months. I would like to know if colleges like MIT, Darden, CMU, Fuqua, Insead, Cornell Johnsson, Yale are in my reach? A very frank opinion will be most appreciated. And if not these, what are the kind of colleges I am looking at?
There are 2 possible cases: 1) I apply this year, 2) Next year.
I would be very very glad if I can get options considering both options.

Thanks in advance!
Best Regards

I guess you are!
And you should be!
I hope you celebrated a little bit.
Plus, Topper at your university??? Oh man! that sounds good.

Are these within your reach? I would say probably? Why only probably? Because you didn't really write us anything about your work experience, which is anyhow pretty important (so are your extra curriculars, and volunteer work). But you do have a superb basis to work from, and with good work experience, I am confident you can apply to all those schools you listed!

(But DO feel free to write us a lot more info here, and we can dig deeper).

When to apply: Next year.

No need to rush things. Enjoy the moment, and your lovely GMAT score. And the extra experience will make you a better candidate. You can also plan to visit the schools in the meanwhile, and start to even think about your essays for next year!

Hey Jon!

Thanks a lot for the reply.
As far as work experience is concerned, I do not do the normal "coding" job as most other peers of mine do. I am involved at a little higher level with the product, my role is that of the assembly project lead, which requires me to be involved with the product beginning from the planning phase, until the product is released to customer. As you could have guessed, I communicate with people from America, Europe and China, on a daily basis. Apart from that, if, like you suggest, I apply next year, I have two options:
1) Stay with the company, and do certification(s). The certifications can be in fields like SCM, SRM, etc.
2) Quit, and start something of my own.

Option 1 is the more feasible, but, if you think that (2) will help my chances of getting into the colleges a LOT more than the first option will, then I can consider 2.
Also, I can learn a language, which will just help me sell myself better.

Again, looking forward to hearing from you!
Regards,

And oh, my extra curriculars, uh, as far as I have seen on the forums, all Indians, have similar extra curriculars. The same, organizing fests & involved in various committees that organized fests. I conducted mock interviews for my juniors in college, to prepare them for placements. I have also been involved with CSR activities, here, in the place I work. Apart from these, I was a part of National Cadet Corps, and Children Traffic Corps.

Gaurav

Hi Gaurav,

Congrats on wonderful scores. Well to be very honest, your work exp. is on lower side, if your are targeting the above mentioned schools. My honest opinion would be to gain an extra work exp. (probably 1 yr,) & then target for 2014 intake. As most of the b-schools look for leadership qualities & professional achievements, you can work upon them during this time & then apply with full vigor. In the meanwhile, you can try your chances in b-schools by clicking to the link https://www.general-ed.com/chances-of-bschool

Having said this, you must focus on your application essays & interviews to make a strong case for your admission.

Do let me know in case of further queries or PM me your number to discussion over your profile or selection of b-school.

Best,
Yash

Regards,
Well I'm not gonna tell you whether you should quit your job or not!!
that's entrapment dude!
:)
but seriously, the decision you make in your professional life whether to take a risk or not and start your own thing is a decision which you need to take with yourself, not with my advice (I mean we don't really know each other) and not thinking about the MBA...

Other than that, to sell yourself better the three best things would be
1. promotions
2. more leadership
3. more leadership
:)

and if you apply next year you will have what - 30 months of work experience?? which puts you at about 42 by matriculation??
that's fine...
