Need help!!!!

by rijul007 » Mon Oct 24, 2011 12:21 pm
Hi. I am planning to appear for GMAT next year in April '12. Its been a couple of weeks since i made up my mind for GMAT.

I have given a few diagnostic tests:
MGMAT 1- 580 (Q-470 , V-29)
GMATprep - 590 (Q-50 , V-24)
Crack-GMAT.com - 580 (Q-52, V-18)
First of all, How accurate are these?

And, as you can see i have really low scores in the verbal section, i want to know how i should go about with my preparation in verbal as of now.
While giving the tests, i was able to do a few RCs, but CR and SC were going way above my head.
If anyone could kindly give suggestions about strategies i should adopt for verbal section.

Also, are there any online platforms where i can can practice good PS and DS questions under time constraint in order to improve my speed?

I have one more question..

How much shud i aim for in Verbal sec.. if i manage to get 49+ in Quant and want to get past 700.. or maybe reach a 750 in the actual GMAT?? and is it possible for me to reach that level looking at my diagnostic score.

Thank You : -)

Accuracy:
Based on my experience, scores in the GMATPrep, most often, are close to actual GMAT scores.
I had heard different versions on the accuracy of diagnostic tests provided by various test-prep firms w.r.t actual GMAT scores.

Strategy for Verbal:
You have not provided any details on the material that you are following for Verbal. So, it would be difficult to comment on this. You can take leaf out of various success stories posted on this site.
I was at the same point as you are now when i started my preparation. Following are the books that I followed for the next 40 days.
RC - MGMAT RC guide
CR - Powerscore CR bible
SC - MGMAT SC guide
Buying any of the 8 MGMAT guides (Q 5 books, V 3 books) would automatically get you access to 6 CAT tests from Manhattan. Most people include these tests in their preparation.

700+ score
Assuming that you will score at least 49 in Quant, I would suggest that you need to target at least 37 in Verbal to cross 700. You definitely have the potential as you have scored almost 600 in the diagnostic tests and have more than 4 months time.

All the best!

Thanks Nishant for your reply :)

I'm sorry i forgot to mention the materials i am following.
To improve my basics in grammar, i have been going through the Wren and Martin High School Grammar for the past week.

Just yesterday i bought an MGMAT SC Guide.
I have also started practicing questions from the OG-12.

Today i gave an MGMAT CAT and scored
570(Q-47, V-25)
This time i scored less in Quant too, could not finish the test on time. I couldn't attempt the last quest and had to guess the preceding two. Need to improve my problem solving speed.

One more query
How should I improve my writing skills?
Are there any particular books/magazines/sites that you recoommend i should follow?

I would suggest you not to do too many tests before learning the concepts. Initially, put all your focus on learning new concepts rather than on timing. During this period a test every 15 days should be fine. But, make sure that you are analyzing all the wrong and the right questions. You can improve timing at a later point in time.

After the half way mark in your preparation, slowly focus on the timing aspect as well. Towards the end, about a month from the exam date, you should concentrate more on timing and increase the frequency of tests.

For writing, there are many templates available on the forum. Pick up a template that is comfortable to you and practice. Additionally, you may follow videos posted on the following site.
