The students did poorly on the test more because they hadn't studied than not understanding the material

How do we correct the parallelism error in the above sentence?

Can it be

The students did poorly on the test more because they hadn't studied than because they hadn't understood the material

?

Kindly help.

Review the idiom more X than Y. The comparison is between the amount of study time and comprehension of material.
