3 times unlucky!

by giggle1050 » Wed Oct 29, 2008 1:03 pm
Hello Everyone

I want to share my tragic story. I have taken the test 3 times and I am still struggling with it.

My scores are:

550, I went without studying and didn’t care too much about it.

Then I took a break for a year and enrolled myself in Veritas and I ended up with a mere 620! (45 Q, 27 V) The stuff they taught at Veritas was very simple while actual GMAT is a lot harder.

Anyways, I gathered myself together and took it for the 3rd time. I practiced all 1000 SC, Kaplan 800, OGs, Manhattan GMAT. I was scoring 700+ in my practice tests so I felt pretty confident this time. However, once again tragedy struck me and I ended up with 640 (44Q, 33V).

I have 8 years of work experience. And I plan to go to only top 10 B-schools. I was targeting Kellogg, Cornell, Yale, Wharton and Berkley but with the competition being so high this year I don’t know how to work around these weak GMAT scores. Though I still have some time for the R2 deadlines but I am sure you all agree that preparing for GMAT is extremely draining…and if for the 4th time I end up with similar score then it will do more harm than good.

I am pretty distressed. I am an Indian woman and though I do not have an IT background, it is not so unique that I can get away with 640. My undergrad scores are above average but not significantly high.

I have two options:

- Appear for the fourth time and try to be a superwoman who is working on GMAT as well as her application essays.

- Just go ahead with 640 and keep my fingers crossed.

I am feeling extremely low. One more thing, my weak areas have repeatedly been RC and CR. When I see complicated sentences my mind just fuses. Do you think it can be improved in 3 weeks…if I decide venturing into it again. If yes, where can I find the hardest CR and RC questions?

Needless to say, this forum is the bestest…and that’s why I decided to pen down this post.

Thanks!

well, you might get away with that score, though I dont know your profile well... https://jc-gmat.blocked/2006/10/jac ... piled.html some interesting read I'd suggest rather concentrate on your application & essays. Read some cool blogs such as clearadmit, stacyblackman's to get the strategy right for MBA app.

Hey there,

Don't fret, you're not the only one going thru such an experience.

I took gmat last week and scored 640 as well. I was devastated but there was no time to regret or feel sorry. The round 2 deadlines are fast approaching so I booked myself another gmat date and am now working on my applications as well as brushing up for gmat.

Since you’ve gone thru the experince once you know what to expect next time. Work from the OG and take gmat prep and powerprep as many times as you can- that’s what I’m doing!!

All the best and hang in there!!

Hi All,
Thanks for your feedback. I am thinking of retaking the GMAT. Could you tell me how to tackle tough RC and CR questions?
Thanks!

RC and CR require a lot of time to master. But it can be done ... Get the powerscore GMAT CR Bible and concemtrate only on the most frequently appearing question types.

Practice from OG/GMATPrep as much as possible.

My Fair Lady...don't you worry!

2 advices from me (and take it from someone who hasn't taken the GMAT exam yet and is scoring roughly in your neighborhood on the practice ones):

> Its NOT what you know. Its WHO you know. If I were you, I'd concentrate on getting to know and networking with KEY KEY admissions players and sell yourself with full confidence. I went for the MBA program where all the top schools came here in DC a few weeks ago and I told many of them I'm a 'B' student and I said it DAMN confidently (without sounding conceited). Many enjoyed speaking with me because I was able to sell myself well and they gave me their 'personal' emails (how cool is that!)

> I'm the type of person who, if I get anything less than a 700 I will retake it because my brain is wired to getting to the end result no matter what it takes. If you have it, then go show YOURSELF more than anything that you can. Yeah, it might sound like you took a fwe times but hey, if you pull it off your going to laugh it HARD at the GMAT notes you've been taking and then you're going to sell yourself with why you took it many times on your application essay.

I hope this help...if anything. And good luck.

Sincerely,

Piyush A.
