Best GMAT prep course

by wantMBA » Wed May 30, 2007 4:40 am
Dear GMAT/MBA fellows,

I am super fresh new in this blog and would be so grateful if anybody could help me out.

I live in Central Asia and am planning to travel to Chicago, Illinois in the end of August for two weeks. I am thinking about taking GMAT prep course during my visit. I know two weeks are not enormous amount of time, but I would like to know if there are any GMAT prep courses are out there in Chicago downtown that are comprised of only two weeks. I am willing to work as many hours necessary (8-12 hrs a day) to master the GMAT. I have been studying it on my own, took two tests, but I am not getting as nearly as what I would like to be. So, I decided that I will pay the big bucks as long as i can get anywhere between 650-700.

Therefore, dear bloggers,
if anybody knows any program where I could turn to, please let me know. I have been trying to contact KAPLAN for almost a week now, but alas, no avail. Please let me know if you know whether or not the 2-week power prep cours would be effective, whether or not there any programs are out there that fill GMAT inside your brain for two weeks and which programs I should go with.

Thank you so much,
I will be looking forward to hearing from you.

Manhattan GMAT

I would take a good look at Manhattan GMAT. They offer a virtual online course, too. I really like their program, especially because they use the Official Guide to the GMAT as an integral part of their course. Please check it out. Their online course lasts 9 weeks. They also offer intense, short term courses, too. Look them up at manhattangmat.com.

We do offer 2-week bootcamps, and there's even one in August, but in NY, not Chicago. And, anyway, I strongly recommend a regular course if at all possible. As long as you've got a high-speed Internet connection, you can attend our live virtual classes from anywhere in the world.

Oh, and don't study 8-12 hours a day. You'll totally burn yourself out and won't learn as well as you could. This is more slow-and-steady-wins-the-race, not a sprint - especially if you want to be up at the 700 level.

Thank You all so much for the suggestions and advice.

Unfortunately, high-speed internet is almost impoossible to attain in my country. Therefore, the online virtual course will not be possible for me.

As far as the 2-week bootcamp - I read about them at the website and they, indeed, do sound quite appealing, but I won't be able to be part of them either, due to its unavailability in Chicago.

How about private tutoring with Manhattan GMAT? Do you think I could or should get a private tutor for two weeks who could assess my both strengths and weaknesses and help me out. How much would that service cost? I would appreciate if anybody affiliated with Manhattan GMAt here in the blog could throw some light into this option.

Thank you all, thanks Eric for such a useful and helpful blog.

We do have instructors (and therefore private tutors) available in Chicago and I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to get someone for the specific timeframe during which you'll be in Chicago.

It is expensive, though. (Please check with the office at [email protected] to confirm anything I say about the rates.) If you just buy an hour, it's $215/hour. If you buy a package of hours, the per-hour rate comes down a bit (between $205 and $185, I think) and, if you buy a large enough package, you get the books and online resources as part of the package.

If cost is a big concern (as it is for almost everyone), we also have a new self-study package which might work for your circumstances. See https://www.manhattangmat.com/gmat-prep-self-study.cfm. If you do this, you could do a lot of the off-line studying on your own before you come to Chicago, and then watch the tapes of the classes yourself while in Chicago (you need broadband for that). You could even combine that with just a couple of private tutoring sessions, if you like, to make the cost more manageable.
