Poker as an EC?

I still have a couple of years before I plan on applying for B-School. However, now is certainly the right time to start thinking about focusing more of my energy in developing certain ECs.

I've been a serious poker for quite a while now. Serious as in - I was able to support myself halfway through college with just winnings from online poker. It is a real passion of mine but at times I am afraid that it might not be the best use of my time, especially in terms of preparing for B-School apps.

Does anyone have any idea if being a successful poker player looks good as an EC on B-School apps? I am rather confused on the issue. On one hand, it certainly does reflect a certain level of balance in my life. But on the other hand, poker isn't exactly contributing much to society at large...

Poker as an EC?
No, ECs, from my point of view, have to do with helping society, your community, college or whatever.

Poker as a hobby, that shows you have analytical skills, are able to remain calm, etc?

Lamdum-

I was in a similar position when applying last year. I actually wrote a whole essay about my poker experience for Kellogg. I didn't get in, but, if that was a reason I didn't (which I sort of doubt anyway), it was probably toward the bottom of the importance list.

I'm sure given your experience with poker that you've learned how to explain it so you don't sound like a degen. I've found poker experience to be valuable for me as something different and that demonstrates a unique skill set.

I'd hesitate to call it an EC but I don't agree with the strict definition of ECs having to help someone or some group. Organized sports fall into ECs, for example.
