by budetta4 » Sun Mar 14, 2010 5:01 am
A certain clock rings two notes at quarter past the hour, four notes at half past, and six notes at three-quarters past.On the hour it rings eight notes plus an additional number of notes equal to whatever hour it is.How many notes will the clock ring between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm, including the rings at 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm?

A 87
B 95
C 102
D 103
E 115

oa 103 because it consider the note done at 1pm 9 they shouldn't be 13
thanks in advance

4 hours between 1 pm and 5 pm inclusive.

Each hour has 2+4+6+8 = 20 notes.
Total notes excluding additional no. of notes is 20*4 = 80

Number of additional notes b/w 1 pm and 5 pm is 1+2+3+4+5 = 15.

But 1 PM has 8 notes. 15+8 = 23.

Totally, 80+23 = 103 notes.

was getting confused so just wrote it down.

Hrs 0 15 30 45 mins
1 9 2 4 6
2 10 2 4 6
3 11 2 4 6
4 12 2 4 6
5 13
Total 103

Each hr it is 20 + the actual hr. so 20X4 + 1 to 4 not till 5 cos we are not counting after 5 p.m.

Feel that at 1 P.M there will be 9 notes but 5 p.m there will be 13 notes.
The total is 103.
