Those who condemn the governor for being unsympathetic to the plight of the automobile industry are merely using that allegation as a smokescreen for their own partisan politics. The citizen who believes their charges fails to realize that a politician may sometimes appear to be lacking compassion for a special interest group when, in reality, she is just trying to implement a public policy that is beneficial to great numbers of people representing diverse interests.
Which of the following, if true, provides the greatest support for the assertion made in the first sentence of the passage?

A)Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between insensitivity to special interest groups and public-spirited devotion to broader concerns

B)Some of the governor's harshest critics are members of automobile workers' unions and politicians with strong ties to the automotive industry.

C)Many people who accuse the governor of being unsympathetic to the plight of the automobile industry voted for her in the last election.

D)The governor is not a politician who makes a clear distinction between partisan politics and civic responsibility.

E)Sometimes a politician who is insensitive to the concerns of a minority group believes that he or she is acting in the community's best interest.

Interesting question. So let's see what the passage is saying.

1. People leveling allegations against the governor are driven by their own partisan politics. Operative word here is "Partisan Politics". Hence a lobby fighting for its own interests.
2. The writer urges citizens, "The citizen who believes their charges" that there could be a broader interest at stake that the Governor is trying to protect. A policy beneficial to great numbers of people representing diverse interests.

The question asks which of the following, if true could provide the greatest support for Statement 1.
Now let's scan answer choices:

A. Out of Scope
B. Very relevant. Its not a diverse group so they don't represent diverse interests. Hence, they are focused on their own partisan politics.
C. Out of Scope
D. The governor is not in question here. Out of scope. Its the governor's actions that matter here.
E. Sometimes? We are talking with specific reference to something that if true, supports the premise. Out of Scope.

I hope this clarifies some things.

iom c

a is discussing broad stake of public interest vs. minority incentives
b is sheer example of another assumption - those who condemned were automobile industry tied people
c is right, as people who condemned new governor voted for her - that is they commit partisan politics by doing not overt reaction to new governor's actions
d is general discussion about partisan politics and new governor's role
e is suggesting poor choice by putting word "sometimes" (uncertainty factor)

to me the answer is B
bcuz the stimulus says that "...... sometimes appear to be lacking compassion for a special interest group" then the people who use allegation can be from some special groups e.g automobile industry.. this will support the argument

b further fragments a "special group" as "some of the harshest critiques ..." and does not provide full support for the "special group" sought

B providies the option by saying the opponents are auto makers who wants their benifit than the long term good the mayor has proposed.
First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement

i received a private message about this problem.

this is a weird problem; i've never actually seen anything like it in any official materials. in particular, you don't need the passage at all on this problem, since the question is just asking you to provide evidence for one statement alone.

therefore -- BEFORE YOU READ the rest of what i'm writing here -- make sure you know that this problem is extremely unimportant for your review. again, nothing like it has ever appeared in any official gmat materials that i've seen.

-----------------

the statement for which we are supposed to provide evidence is this:
Those who condemn the governor for being unsympathetic to the plight of the automobile industry are merely using that allegation as a smokescreen for their own partisan politics

whoa! lots of big words!
if you get to the bottom of this statement, you'll realize what it means: basically, "people who say that the governor is hostile to the auto industry are only saying so because of their own political motives."
statement (b) is the only one that actually gives evidence for this claim -- namely, if the people making the criticisms are tied to the automotive industry, then they have political motivation to make those criticisms.
the other statements don't provide any evidence for such political motivations.
