bold face must discuss

by arorag » Sun Aug 09, 2009 10:59 am
Modern navigation systems, which are found in most of today’s commercial aircraft, are made with low-power circuitry, which is more susceptible to interference than the vacuum-tube circuitry found in older planes. During landing, navigation systems receive radio signals from the airport to guide the plane to the runway. Recently, one plane with low-power circuitry veered off course during landing, its dials dimming, when a passenger turned on a laptop computer. Clearly, modern aircraft navigation systems are being put at risk by the electronic devices that passengers carry on board, such as cassette players and laptop computers.

The two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?
(A) The first is a principle that the argument relies on and the second is a conclusion that can be drawn from the first.
(B) The first is a fact that argument relies on and the second is a conclusion that must be drawn from this argument.
(C) The first acknowledges a consideration that supports that main position; the second is that conclusion.
(D) The first is an evidence that supports the conclusion, the second is that conclusion.
(E) The first is a principle that is necessary for this argument, the second is a conclusion that could be drawn from this argument.
Why not B
I go with D.

the conclusion (second part) does not necessarily have to follow from the first hence B is out for me.
Going one step further, the conclusion cannot be inferred from the first since the two bolded parts don't logically follow hence A and E also out for me.

I eliminate C because the first is not a consideration, its a give fact (or evidence)...

someone pls correct me if they think my logic is incorrect. The best way to learn is from our mistakes!

I would also go with D.
"Native of" is used for a individual while "Native to" is used for a large group

In C, first it says it supports the main position and it is the main conclusion.. if that is the case, then the conclusion must be about radio waves, runways ....

nopes..not convincing enough.
and I have problems with D. IMO its not an evidence that supports the conclusion.
"Recently, one plane with low-power circuitry veered off course during landing, its dials dimming, when a passenger turned on a laptop computer."
this is an evidence.
IMO C

C is the answer ?

A and B are out as the argument does not rely on the first bold statement. The statement is only acting as an additional premise. E is also out as it is not necessary for an argument. D is out as it is not the evidence; so I guess C should be the answer as it seems to acknowledge a consideration that is supporting the main position.

damn...tough one

B seems a stong contender. Wondering how to interpret the first, is it a

1. fact
2. consideration
3. principle

can someone explain the differences between these?

E what's the OA? Could someone please provide explanation. I do not think first bold part support the conclusion it 's just a piece of evidence .
Please do not post answers visibly . Please hide them or post them later after the discussion.

Hello,
IMO B
my explanation
A, first is not a principle - principle is something which explains 'why low-power circuitry is more susceptible to interference?'
B, imo B
C, possible contender
D, first is not an evidence - evidence for the conclusion is 'Recently, one plane with low-power circuitry veered off....'
E, first is not a principle

Hi,
I think that will be "C".

This is my reasoning...The Main Position is: Modern navigation systems, ... Recently, one plane with low-power circuitry veered off course during landing, its dials dimming, when a passenger turned on a laptop computer.

After: Clearly, it's the conclusion.

(E) and (A)=> First is not a principle!
(D)=> First is not a evidence!
(B)=> (Here it is really tough..) My opinion is: It's fact but not the argument relies on...! It relies on: Recently one plane....etc! For that, it could not be this one!

Only left => (C)

What do you think, guys?

Cheers!

For me, its between C and E .. close call.

I will go for E
