Consecutive Integers

Are the integers x, y and z consecutive?

1. The arithmetic mean (average) of x, y and z is y.
2. y-x = z-y

IMO E

s1) ex: 10,30,50 avg 30 but not consecutive

29,30,31 avg 30 but consecutive
hence insuff

s2) for abve ex: s2 also gives two ans hence insuff

s1+s2: for abve same ex two possibilities hence insuff

St.1) The arithmetic mean (average) of x, y and z is y. so x is as much lesser than y as z is greater than y ..
so the integers could be y-p, y, y+p
now this can be any number so we can't say x,y,z are consecutive or not...
insufficient.....


St.2) y-x = z-y --> 2y = x+z --> y = (x+z)/2 --> it also says y is the arithmetic mean (average) of x, y
hence it is also insuff....

combined) since st.1 and st.2 gives same thing ... so overall insuff..Ans E
