Really really low GMAT score

by itobean » Tue Mar 27, 2007 7:18 am
So I'm wondering if there is anyone else out there in the same boat as me??? I took a practice GMAT about 9 months ago and scored a 500 and I just took another practice GMAT last night - yeah - I got a 400. Not good. Granted I've attempted to take online courses through Manhattan GMAT (which are awesome) but I didn't make the time to study or attend all the sessions. Needless to say, my current score really reflects that.

So I've scheduled my actual test for 6 weeks from now. So it's crunch time...the quarter is over and I'm not taking classes....it's all about studying for the next 6 weeks.

Anyone else in a similar situation?

Scoring really low

by GCHall840 » Tue Mar 27, 2007 7:25 pm
I was in your shoes a long time ago where I didn't score more than 400 on the real GMAT. So, I put things off for quite awhile until I decided to get serious. Honestly, I have tried Kaplan and a few other test prep companies, but they didn't appeal to me.

Last year, I bought all of the Manhattan GMAT strategy guides so that I could study on my own. Unfortunately, that was not a good idea. The MG guides are good, but I was not focused.

This year, I made the decision to enroll in the Manhattan GMAT virtual online course because I really liked their material. I know that if you only have 6 weeks until you take the GMAT, but I wish that you had the time to take that course again because it is well worth it.

I think that the biggest reason that I went ahead and signed up for their online course was for the structure that I didn't get by studying on my own. The MG online course has all sorts of additional online material that I think is extremely useful and beneficial to someone like me who has not been what I call a good test taker.

If you still have the MG materials, I would use them to your advantage.

Online Courses

That was my problem in the beginning - not being focused. But the best thing about Manhattan GMAT is that you have access to everything for 3 months after the class! So I'm still within that window so I'm just watching the recorded classes and doing all the homework. I still have the "office hours" available to me also. I really love working with Manhattan GMAT - they really break things done for you! It may seem like a ton of work to do each week, but now that I'm actually doing it, it's not so bad.

I work full-time too so it's difficult to crunch in all the hours for studying. But I'm doing my best. I'm finding that I will not have a life for the next 6 weeks!! Which is fine when the payoff is entrance into a great grad program!! :)

Good luck to you!!

I'm in the same boat but I can't afford these online classes. I'm just not sure that I can get the most out of it unless its actual face to face. I'm having difficulty focusing and remembering the key items. I guess I'll find out in 2 weeks if I prepared enough...

The Manhattan GMAT virtual online course

by GCHall840 » Fri Mar 30, 2007 1:58 pm
I didn't really know what to expect when I signed up for the Manhattan GMAT online course although I already was familiar with their strategy guides. I took an online course from Kaplan that had a recorded lesson for each subject area. There was no one on one approach at all. I thought that it was not worth the money that I paid for it as I got lost in that process where there was no structure to speak of as far as I was concerned.

Well, the MG virtual online course has turned out to be just the perfect thing. And, virtual means that there is a real live person teaching a class right over the internet. There are two instructors who are very good at what they do. They are also very into helping you if you need it. I think that the whole Manhattan GMAT prep package is well worth the money. Trust me, I have been trying to prepare for the GMAT for quite awhile now. Manhattan GMAT is by far the best that there is. And, it sure beats studying on your own because it has a certain structure built into their process, that has worked out very well for me.

Thanks for the kind words, Greg. Itobean, you can retake the course for a much smaller fee if you like (though, of course, it lasts 9 weeks and you take the test in 6). Since you still have access to the online stuff, you can also construct your own course by watching the taped classes (and it seems like you're doing this). The only drawback, of course, is that you can't ask the teacher questions if you don't get something. Although... I guess that's what Beat the GMAT is for, huh? :D
Please note: I do not use the Private Messaging system! I will not see any PMs that you send to me!!

You want to know the really pathetic part??? I already did that!! So this would be my 3rd time doing the class but like I stated before, I just wasn't dedicated enough and I had taken on way too much stuff with the animal rescue group I volunteer with, 2 online classes through UCLA, full-time work, 3 dogs, 1 cat, 1 hamster, and a husband who lives/works out of town (so house and yard are my sole responsibility!)

But I'm getting back with it though. And I'm loving the recorded sessions. Typically other students have asked the same questions I'm thinking so so far so good!!

I've taken my second practice test and my verbal score jumped dramatically; still not as high as it needs to be but at least I'm making improvements.....now if I can just get the math down!
