551. Once positioned in space, the Hubble Space Telescope will capture light from sources twenty times fainter compared to those that can be detected by ground-based instruments.
(A) compared to those that can be detected
(B) compared to those they can detect
(C) than that can be detected
(D) than those that can be detected
(E) than those detecting

OA is D /. I want to know why OA is better than C.

Once positioned in space, the Hubble Space Telescope will capture light from sources twenty times fainter than those[sources] that can be detected by ground-based instruments

Vs

Once positioned in space, the Hubble Space Telescope will capture light from sources twenty times fainter than that[seems to refer to light] which can be detected or simply detected by ground-based instruments

It's my contention that light should be the referent of those, since light rather than resources can be faint and be detected.

IMO Compared to is used to show similarity between two unlike things...

e.g. "Human Brain is compared to Super Computer"

Compared with is used to show similarity or comparison between like things...since the things here discussed are similar so we need "compared with" and not "compared to"

If the options would have been "compared with"...then they would have been in the equal race to be the winner.

I second that....light can be detected and not sources.

"Those" is referring to sources buddy..

answer this: What can be detected by ground based instruments?
Sources . isnt it??

Well, any instrument ground based or space based captures light emitted by these sources to detect them..

Let's break the sentence to make it clear to you..

1. The Hubble Space Telescope will capture light from x
2. x is twenty times fainter than y
3. y can be detected by ground-based instruments.

As you can see we are comparing x and y.. so both have to be same.. and they are sources..

hope this helps..

How could the sources be fainter??? It is the "Light from Sources" is fainter. I think its C. The Hubble Space Telescope will capture [light from x] twenty times fainter than [light from Y] can be detected by ground-based instruments. Please clarify..
