Feedback & suggestion on my profile

by bohemian86 » Mon Aug 05, 2013 4:05 am
Hi friends,

Hope you all are doing fine.

I wanted to get some feedback / evaluation on my profile and get some inputs on which college to apply to.

1). Nationality: Indian.
2). Graduation: NIT (Ranked 2nd to IITs) in 2008 in Mechanical Engineering.
3). Work Ex - 5 years in a SME dealing in heavy machinery. Helped develop new verticals for the company. Currently heading the operations of a complete state. Dealt with Global manufacturers from China, Korea, Spain and U.K on a regular basis. Made two visits to China that affected company's operations significantly.
4). Extra Curricular - Photography (Have my own travel blog), travelling, reading and Playing Tennis.
5). GMAT - 700 (6.0AWA)

Career Goal: To manage global operations of a Multinational (General Management Role).

I am considering ISB, INSEAD and IESE till now. However, I also want to apply to some safer B-schools.

Will appreciate if someone can give an honest feedback and suggest possible colleges to apply to.

Cheers,

Hey there,

I really like your profile! It's like a breath of fresh air - you didn't mention IT once :)

Just kidding!

Overall, I think you're in a great spot. The schools you've listed are all international so a question to you - are you only interested in those or are you looking at US based ones too?

Honestly (and I don't get to say this often), I think you should step up your search. There are some highly ranked programs that aren't on your list for what you're trying to do and I think you should give them a shot.

Some to stretch for: MIT, Kellogg - both have highly ranked ops programs and placement for exposure to large MNCs

Some that are aligned: Ross, Tepper (Tepper is really highly ranked for ops, FYI)

Some that are safer: McCombs, Kelley, Scheller

I hope this helps - but if you have any other questions or want to talk specifics, don't hesitate to ask!

Hi Bhavik,

Thanks for your prompt reply. Appreciate it.

I think I wasn't very clear when i mentioned operations of a state. What I meant was heading the business operations of a state (Sales & Business Development). I'm currently in a small organization (turnover of around Rs.100 cr), that trades heavy machines from across the globe and then provides sales and service in India and neighbouring country. With a career goal of managing global operations, I intend to go in a more cross-functional / leadership role involving larger complexities. I am not very sure whether MIT will be the best choice for it (please correct me if I'm wrong. I am also exploring future career options and the possibilities through various functions, so any guidance in that will be helpful). I have chosen ISB, INSEAD & IESE more because of their strength in international MBA and General management (However ISB is not that popular for International MBA). Do you think US schools will be a good choice? Also, I haven't got to stay in another country for a long time. Will that make a difference?

Cheers

Oh I see - my apologies - I misunderstood!

I had mentioned those schools because of their focus on operations / supply chain so let's start over again.

So you're looking for a fairly general management / finance oriented MBA. I added Finance to that because if you're looking to take on any sort of leadership role in this, or another company, a finance background would serve you well.

A thing to note - international MBAs are useful in one of two ways. Either because they give you an international network, or because they focus on the complexities of international business. Either way, that doesn't necessarily mean an MBA in a particular country is the best option.

INSEAD is going to be a little bit of a stretch but you do have experiences that state your ability to work with other cultures and working styles so that's a plus. ISB is an interesting choice - it's good if you want to stay within India but it's brand is limited in terms of both reach and capabilities at times. So just something to consider.

I mean, honestly, US schools are going to be great choices, not just good ones. They have the international reach that you're looking for as well as the broad based academic and experience sets you need.

I think at this point, with your goals as broad yet logical as they are, you should really open up your selection set to the entire list of top MBA programs. There are some within the US that could definitely meet your needs.

If you'd like, we can talk about it here or you can set up time with me chat about it on the phone. Either way, it's up to you!

Look forward to it!
