Corporations that seek to maximize profits are improving the general welfare of the nation at large. While critics might argue that corporate greed can have a negative effect on the state of living in the United States, the overall result of companies pursuing maximum profits is a more robust, financially sound nation.

One has to look no further than discount retailer, Target Inc., to discover the benefits of a corporation seeking to maximize profits. In order to ring up maximum profits, a store must provide excellent customer service. From cashiers to shelf stockers, Target hires thousands of people to keep their stores running smoothly. These jobs not only keep the unemployment rate of the nation low, but also provide a regular source of income for those securing the positions. When people are supplied with a steady state of income, both their families and the general welfare of the nation benefit. As more jobs are created, more income taxes are paid. These income taxes help pay for our medicare, medicaid, national infrastructure, and a host of other national programs -- all meant to benefit the general welfare of the nation.

Many companies who seek to maximize profitability also give back to the community in the form of philanthropic donations. At Target, for example, the local stores donate 5% of their profits to help fund community programs. Additionally, employees volunteer their time to help work on community projects -- these projects, in turn, benefit the general welfare of the people.

The pursuit of maximum profits enhances the welfare of our nation in many different ways. The jobs, money, and other resources created by a company seeking to maximize profits can help a community grow and develop and, in turn, help our nation flourish.
