Question regarding issue type essays

by siddus » Mon Jun 07, 2010 10:29 am
Hi all,

While reviewing some of the issue type essays on the internet I have found that people generally tend to write against the issue. Sometimes when I analyze the issue, I find compelling points against a topic and when I try to find how others have responded, I find its usually the opposite.

I have looked at some of the AWA guides but this point was not specifically mentioned anywhere. Any help would be most appreciated.

Also, I have seen some posts around the forum about essay templates. I would like to know how one should differentiate one from another? I mean is it OK that a lot of people use the same popular templates?

Sorry if this is an irrelevant question, but it just crossed my mind.

Cheers
Sid.

Issue prompts are intentionally written to allow you to write a strong essay from either a pro or con perspective. There's no "right" answer; they're looking for how you reason and communicate, not for a specific point of view. And it's not a problem that many people use the same templates. Readers are not scoring you on originality, and the various templates have evolved because they're effective. Many people who write essays that follow reliable organizational structures get good results from the essay scorers. That's not to say that you HAVE to follow a pre-determined structure, but it can make organization and brainstorming a lot easier, and it's highly unlikely that doing so will have a negative impact on your score.
