The issue of whether or not employees in any public or private business settings shold have complete autonomy is a controversial one. On one hand, in any kind of business, employees need to have autonomy to make individual decisions under no influence of others. On the other hand, eomployees that are even at the highest level of managment do require supervision in order to ensure that all decisions that they make are beneficial to the businesses that they run. In my final analysis, I think that all employees are definitely required to be supervised in various degree, as this is crucial in order to avoid any employee to do anything illegal or take too much risk.
One reason of my belief is that if employees have completely autonomy, there is a possibility that they can do something illegal to hurt the company. For instance, in the Enron case, Kenneth Ray created fake companies to inflate earning of the company. His action not only misled many stakeholders to believe that they company was growing rapidly, but also ended up led the company to legal and financial crisis and eventually winded up.
Another reason of my belief is that if employees are without any supervision, they can make many risky decisions that can do severe harm to the company. For example, in the Baring Bank case, a trader too too much risk in his job and ended up making the company oweing an enormous debt in the financial market. The company went bankcrupted at last.
Some may argue that employees need the complete autonomy to make decision under no influence of others. However, in the business setting nowadays, team work is very important. As no one have all the expertise to make the best decision, working with others can definitely get the essential information necessary for emoployees to make better decisions.
In conclusion, a certian extent of supervision to all employees is essential in order to make sure that whatever decisions that they make are beneficial to the company.
