AWA ESSAYS: Analyze Issues
ESSAY QUESTION:
"Employees should expect no privacy while on the job, even when engaging in personal communication via telephone or e-mail. Employers are paying for their employees' time and have a reasonable expectation that this time is spent solely on work-related activities."
Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the position stated above. Support your views with reasons and examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.
YOUR RESPONSE:
Many people consider that while on the job, employees should not engage in personal communication via telephone or email since the company is paying for the employee time, they expect it to be strictly professional. While this argument is certainly a controversial one, I do believe that employees engagement in the company should be that of a professional one and not personal.
When employees get hired at a company, they are bound to a certain ethical code and conduct of behaviour. Such rules include that of being strictly professional within the company premises. Most of the companies pay their employees by the hour and it is does not depend on the result of the work. Clearly, if the employee spends more time getting invovled in personal issues, he spends more time finishing a project, this increases project completion time and thus, this results into wastage of comapny ressources.
Another argument that one could point out is that if the employee spends too much time on personal communication, he it might be difficult for him to actually focus on the work activity. Thus, declining the efficiency level of an employee. For example, one might seriously consider the need of employee who is constantly on the phone and email with his friends. While this is not beneficial to the company, it is not beneficial to the employee himself, such events risk his credibility. Furthermore, this might even affect his career.
While the earlier argument might be completely true, some might arguze that the employers must also consider that sometimes the employees have genuine issues and thus they need to probably attend to all personal communication via telephone and/or emails. Such an example would be when a relative expires or probably when the employee has some kind of changes or problems in personal life. This could seriously have an impact on company's productivity as well.
In summation, I do believe that employees must only engage in work related activities while at work. However, occassional exceptions to this rule might not actually the employers and actually might improve the employee's productivity.
