I have an admit from University of Buffalo and am thinking of applying to fordham and Baruch as the adcom has shown grt interest in my profile.

Are Fordham and Baruch better then Buffalo for Finance?

Hi Paul19 - congrats on the admit to U of Buffalo! It's hard to say which of these schools is "better" - it really depends on who you ask. (Unfortunately none of the three you name are considered powerhouse schools for finance - they're all decent universities but they're not the heavy hitters in NY.) BW considers Fordham and U Buffalo very similar, based on its rankings; Baruch is unranked. That's just one publication's opinion and when you move out of the Top 30-ish bschools, then there's some argument that the rankings matter much less... but it's worth noting what "those who know" (supposedly) have declared about the respective programs.

What you can do is look at the companies that recruit at each, and see which ones you're most interested in. Corporate finance is less competitive than a career in ibanking and there's definitely a lot of good jobs to go around. Where do you want to work (geographically) upon graduation? All three of these schools are likely to mostly attract local employers. If you're going to go back to India then any of these might be perfect for you, since you'll be mostly on your own in terms of the job search. If you intend on staying in the US then you may want to think about where you care to work after the MBA (remembering of course that work visas are not automatic for international graduates, you'd need to be sponsored by the hiring organization and not all of them are keen for that).

Fordham and Baruch are going to have more tri-state employers and will definitely have more NYC opportunities. So that could be a factor in your decision-making process.

You're young enough that you could put this whole thing off a year if you felt it would put you in a stronger position post-MBA. You definitely want to go to the best school possible as it will determine the near-term trajectory of your life, so choose wisely!! :-)

Best of luck!

Hi,

Congrats on your admit!! But the above mentioned b-schools are nowhere in top 100 FT rankings. Would suggest you to do lot of research before joining the school/class. With the given information, you can target b-schools like: IOWA-Tippie, Babson-Olin, Washington-St. Louis, SMU-Cox, Georgia-Terry and Cincinnati. These are few decent schools good placement in finance post-MBA.You can try your chances in b-schools by clicking https://url2it.com/bdcbr

Feel free to post any other queries you might have. You can also PM your number to have a detail discussion on your profile and selection of b-schools.

Thank u EssaySnark and Richa for ur help.

Essaysnark I do agree wth u abt the whole increasing the gmat ,waitin an year an applyin wth a stronger profile. But one thing i missed out mentioning is i hav take the Gmat 5 times in 4 yrs(landin around 600 score).Though i dont come undr the Typical Indian pool of IT students, and aftr takin an admission consultant's help (who was BTW grt) i was rejected by NE,Neeley,Katz(wthout an interview),Wake forest(wth intervw). All these schools had the same feedback tht my workex & gmat are a bit low Though My workex is grtr thn thr avg.And do trust me whn i say my essays were damn good.Am done wth Gmat n if the schools such as Katz say thr applicant pool is quiet competitive and my profile is weak. Thn i dont think it wuld be any better whn i apply nxt yr, As year by year the avgs r increasing. Thts y i took the decision of joining one of the three colleges.

Richa As mentioned abv i have been rejected by colleges which didnt even make to FT list this Time wouldnt th mean expectin schools such as Cox,Tippie to accept me will be a waste of tym? abt the othr schools i dont meet thr requiremnt of 16 yrs education.

Hmm, well then retaking might not be the best of ideas then. I totally agree that looking at actual hiring statistics and recruiters is your best bet. Talking to students and alumni will also help you get a clear idea of what your job options might be. Also think about location - Buffalo is far upstate NY, very cold and very snowy, but likely to be much quieter and much much cheaper than living in the city. But in the city you have the advantage of doing your job search as you drink in the bars!!!
