data suffciency

by vaivish » Fri Aug 01, 2008 1:42 am
If a>b>c>0, is c<3?
(1) 1/a>1/3
(2) 1/a+1/b+1/c=1
A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient but Statement (2) ALONE is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient but Statement (1) ALONE is not sufficient.
C. BOTH Statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER Statement alone is sufficient.
D. Each Statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

OA is D

You should post it in data sufficiency, it would be more logical.

IMO D.

Statement 1 is straigtforward.

Statement 2 :
Question says a>b>c>0.

if c = 3 and b>c and a>b
then the sum of their reciproicals will never be equal to 1.

Hi raunekk,

Even i was wondering for some time about the second statement.
It is actually very easy .. I wil try 2 explain using a eg.

just assume c = 3.
question says a>b>c
so lets take b = 4 and a = 5.

Try adding
(1/a) + (1/b) + (1/c) -----> sum wil always lesser than 1

take c = 4 then b = 5 and a = 6.. try adding them again .. --> sum wil be less than 1

Thats cos a , b , c are in the denominator.

Hopue u understood

see these set of values.

c = 2; b= 3; a = 6.

the sum wil be 1. :wink:
