Passage map/Headline map

by dippradhan » Sun Jan 23, 2011 9:03 am
Hi there,
The headline list summarizes topic/main idea of the passage. Passage map is the headline of all he paragraphs in a RC passage. I am wondering if anyone has a standard passage map document for all OG12 RC passages. I want to point out if I am making any mistake while creating the passage map.

Thanks,
Dipankar

Not sure if people tend to save their passage maps. It comes by practice and there would be no passage map that would be identical to the other. As long as you get to grasp the content and answer the questions, you are good. If there is a specific passage that you had hard time with, post your passage map for feedback. Hope this helps.

Hi there,

Here is my outline for a passage map about a fictional whale passage:

Topic: whales
Scope: whale-watching popularity
P.1: to introduce human fascination w/whales
P.2: to describe development of marine biology
P.3: to explain origins of whale-watching
P.4: to show how popular it has become/admit the risks
P.5: to argue in favor of protection for whales
Author's POV: + about whales, ambivalent (+/-) about whale-watching
Overall Purpose: to give history of whale-watching & suggest further protection for whales

I like to write down the function of each paragraph and NOT a summation (or a mere restatement of details), since that is already found in the passage. The idea is to use an infinitive verb; it forces you to think of the structure of the argument and consider the passage from the author's pov.

To see how I would mark-up a passage visually, you might want to check out this link: https://grockit.com/blog/collegeprep/201 ... te-taking/

Hope this helps! :)
