Leadership Activities - Making My Application Noteworthy

Noteworthy leadership activities outside your career are essential
to demonstrate your interests, talents and values. This is a major but
addressable vulnerability in my current profile.

Does anyone have ideas how I can identify and present significant leadership roles that require minimal time and avoid the perception of expediency?

Any success stories?

Thanks...I'm applying this fall (Oct).

hi bt,

from my understanding of your question, you want to develop significant leadership experience in minimal time from now onwards, without coming across as doing so to show on ur apps?

if my understanding is correct, ur probably falling into the trap of doing an activity for the purpose of demonstration rather than self-interest.

rather than get into this loop, you would be better off talking about experiences from your background that demonstrate your leadership skills that have been visible/acquired over a period of time. this could include your participation in your office social committee or through a community that you were part of during your academic years or through self-initiatives undertaken by you that went beyond the scope of your defined work roles or social work that you have already undertaken during the past few months/years.

leadership is multi-faceted and you would be better served relying on your experiences based on what you have gained over a period of time than to undertake new ventures just for the sake of putting them on your apps. this is not to say that you should not get involved in new ventures, but do what is meaningful to you.
Do your best without expectation!

I agree with the previous poster. Given that you are planning to apply in October, you might be better off focusing on your prior activities. You may need to redefine your view of "extra-curricular" activities. Here's a recent article from BusinessWeek that might help shape your thinking:

Best of luck with the application process!
