Hi M7MBA,

We're told that Elton arrived on Monday at the recording studio at 8:00 am and left at noon (12:00 pm), after he had finished recording 5/9 of his new album. On Tuesday, he arrived at 8:10 am, and left after he had completed recording the rest of the album, while working at the same rate as the day before. We're asked to find the time that Elton left the recording studio on Tuesday.

Since we know it took 4 hours to record 5/9 of the album, we can set up a ratio to determine how long it took to record the remaining 4/9 of the album:

(4)/(5/9) = (X)/(4/9)
16/9 = 5X/9
16 = 5X
X = 3 1/5 hours = 3 hours 12 minutes

Since Elton began recording on Tuesday at 8:10am, he finished at 11:22am.

Final Answer: B

We can create a proportion in which we let n = the time to complete the album:

(5/9)/4 = (4/9)/n

5/36 = 4/(9n)

45n = 144

n = 144/45 = 16/5 = 3 1/5 hours = 3 hours and 12 minutes

Since he arrived at 8:10 am on Tuesday, he left at 11:22 am.

Answer: B
