Africa's black rhino population in the mid-1970's numbered about 20,000, ten times the estimated population of 2,000 in 1997.

(A) the estimated population
(B) that of their estimated population
(C) more than the population's estimated amount
(D) more black rhinos than their population estimate
(E) more than that of their population's estimated amount

What does option B mean?

B is making no sense
literal reading of "that of their" is bringing redundancy
hence B is wrong

Hi abhasjha,

The "intent" of this sentence is to emphasis the number of black rhinos (20,000) in the mid-1970s was 10 times the number of black rhinos (2,000) in 1997.

Answer B communicates that idea, but includes a number of unnecessary/redundant words: "that" refers to "2,000", "their" refers to the "black rhinos" in 1997; neither of those words is necessary though. Redundancy is incorrect on the GMAT, so answer B is incorrect.

Hi All,

I think that most, if not all of you already know the correct answer to this SC. Most of the wrong answers in this SC are based on idiom and "style" errors:

1) Idiom - the word "amount" refers to something that is NOT physically countable. Since rhinos ARE countable, the word "amount" is incorrect. Eliminate C and E.

2) Redundancy - the words "that" and "their" are unnecessary, since we already know that we're discussing rhinos. Eliminate B and D.

Final Answer: A
