Most parents make little use of baby clothing. For example, more than half of all parents dress their infants a particular garment only a few times during about a one month period before stowing that garment away. In addition, 24 percent of all parents let their babies wear any particular piece of clothing only a single time.

Which of the following, if true, would cast the most serious doubt on the claim that most parents do not get much use out of baby clothing?

A) Many parents have more than one child.
B) Most parents get baby clothes as presents from their friends and family.
C) It is customary for most infants to wear clothes which were handed down from siblings and relatives.
D) Infants need more new clothing than adults because they grow out their existing garments quickly.
E) There is a huge second-hand market for baby clothing.

What About D?

Stem:Most parents make little use of baby clothing
Reasoning: Why ??Possibility that infants grow at a faster rate so parents do not get much use out of baby clothing.

it is definitely D.
if D is true, parents do get most use of baby clothing; the fact that most parents have to change the baby's clothing too quickly is not that they are just throwing them away, but that their child grows quickly, that is all

Those who are selecting choice D for this one are misreading the question stem! This is a WEAKEN question - we are seeking to "cast doubt."

Therefore we are trying to weaken the idea that "Most parents make little use of baby clothing." So we want them to get more than "little use."

D does not help to show that they get more use, but rather explains why the do get little use.

Answer Choice A is not bad because if the parents have more than one child they COULD use the clothing on the additional children and therefore get more use. But this may also not be true. Parents, think celebrities here, might just want to have brand new clothes for every child. So it would require an extra assumption to pick choice A.

Choice C takes care of that assumption. C explicitly states that clothing is reused. Now the clothes are handed down within families. So the parents can get more than a "little use."

Choice C should be the correct answer.

I would say that E also requires an assumption - there might be a "huge market" for second hand baby clothing, but does that mean that "most babies" are using handed-down clothes?

Choice C actually says "It is customary for most infants to wear clothes which were handed down" so that tells us that the majority of babies are wearing these handed-down clothes. E simply says "huge market." There is a "huge market" for luxury cars but how many people actually own one 1 out of 20 maybe? So the assumption you have to make is that the "huge market" means that most parents are getting more use from baby clothes than mentioned above.

I came down to the options A and C and chose A. But David is correct as option A is a bit wishy washy.

Option A: Many parents have more than 1 child. In this case what about the parents who have only 1 child, their usage is less. The stimulus does not talk about whether the parents use the clothes based on the number of children in the house. It specifically talks about the usage of the clothes for the children.


On the other hand, option C is more precise and specifically tells us that it is customary to accept clothes from relatives and use them (wear them). It states that the clothes are reused irrespective of the fact that they are used more or less, old or new. Hence this option negates the conclusion properly and specifically.

All the other options are explained below:

Option B: Out of scope as the option does not talk about the usage of the clothes at all. It only talks about buying the clothes.

Option D: Strengthens the argument as the option tells that if the infants grow more faster they use the existing clothes to a bare minimum...

Option E: A huge second hand market for children's clothes means that the clothes are not that used and so they can be re-used based on the condition of the clothes...
