In recent years, Braeburn Corporation has seen lagging sales of its food products. Just a few of the many food products Braeburn sells are soy products. Soy products have been shown to reduce rates of cancer. Because people care about reducing their risk of cancer, Braeburn should increase manufacturing of soy products. This will help Braeburn Corporation improve sales and increase profits.

How well this argument is.....

My response:

In the preceding statement, the author wants to convince people that increased manufacturing of soy products can help Braeburn Corporation, who is suffering lagging sales of its food products, improve sales and boost profits. The writer do so by arguing that soy products are good to prevent cancer, and people care about reducing their risk of cancer. Therefore, increaing manufacturing of soy products is good way to change the situation. Though, his claim may have some merit, he presents a poorly reasoned argument, which bases on some unsubstantiated assumption. Using solely what the author provides, it is hard for us to accept his argument as valid.

The writer's assumptions, the basis for his argument, have many issues. First of all, the author assumes that Braeburn has enough capacity and resources to increase manufacturing of soy products. what if all the machines and workers are working with full capacity and cannot working overtime. What if the company is in debt; therefore, it doesnot have enough money to pay for materials needed to produce soy products. It is clear that with these strains, the company cannot raise level of manufacturing soy products.

Another unproven assumption the author employs is that people will buy soy products of Braeburn. The author fails to provide us evidence to prove that people who will buy soy products of the company. what if there are soy products of competitors which are much more superior than Braeburn's soy products. Furthermore, although people care about reducing risk of cancer, they have many ways besides using soy products to reduce risks. Therefore, they are possible not to buy soy products. The last thing to consider is that whether the price of soy products of Braeburn is cheap enough for customers to buy. The author does not say anything about the price, making his argument vulnerable to attack.

Although, the author uses several questionable for his arguments, we cannot say that his reasoning is without base. There are several ways for the author to close the logic gaps and then render his claim more reasonable. One thing the writer can do is showing that Braeburn has necessary resources to meet production requirements. Moveover, the writer also needs to present that soy products of Braeburn are at least as good as it's rivals' products. Furthermore, the price of the products should be shown to ensure that customers can afford it. the author's argument can improve alot when he can show these evidence.

In sum, the author's argument is flaw because it bases on several questionable assumptions. If the author wants to change his readers' minds about the issue, he have to largely restructure his argument, show more evidence, close his logic gap, and clearly explicate his assumptions. Without doing so, few people will accept his argument.
