OA: The candidate spent a significant time in the South, preaching a strong message of family values, lest he lose the vote in those states.

Here, it is unclear whether the modifier in red serves to modify preaching (implying that the candidate was PREACHING because he did not want to lose the vote) or spent (implying that the candidate SPENT TIME IN THE SOUTH because he did not want to lose the vote).
The OA is not valid.
