Rahul bhai, as we are working together on the MBA MAP, a quick and short response here won't do justice to your queries. So we'll take the detailed evaluation & recommendations offline and take it in a structured manner.

Keep your helmet on and get ready for a little more offline torture.

It would be great if you could come back here to share your feedback about the process.

GMAT Quantitative Section Preparation: Math Overview

GMAT Quantitative questions are normally considered to be easier than their GMAT verbal cousins. Most applicants from an engineering background score high on the GMAT quant section. But just because they are the low-hanging fruits, doesn't mean you can take them lightly as a higher GMAT score would require you to crack difficult GMAT quantitative questions.

This post provides an overview of the Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency type of questions in the GMAT maths section...Read More

Hi Sameer,
I wanted to know about the chances of applicants who apply immediately after their graduation. Is work experience necessary to be admitted to the top schools or it depends on the application? Do B schools favor applicants with work experience?
Thank you

Hi,

I would like to share my profile and discuss school options with you.

GMAT History:-
GMAT 1: 600 (Q:49,V:22)
GMAT 2: 620 (Q:48,V:27)
GMAT 3: 580 (Q:50,V:18)
After giving 3 attempts, I could not think of re-taking GMAT anymore

Work Experience:-44 months by the time I join.
Working in Infosys Ltd.
Promotion: Recruited as Systems Engineer Trainee. Promoted to Systems Engineer and now working as a Senior Systems Engineer.
Working in Banking & Capital Markets Division for client Bank of America.

Academics:- Bachelor in Engineering in Electronics & Telecomm.
GPA: 3.6
2nd topper in final year and awarded gold medal
Studied French for 8 years during school.

Extra Curricular Activity:-
Active member of my college IEEE student branch. Served as the Secretary of my college IEEE branch.
Organized various events in my college such as paper presentation.
Awarded Lt. Governor award for my work in Scouts & Guides in 2001.

I feel GMAT score will be an overall low point in my application

One key point: I won't be looking for a job post-MBA in US, as I have to return back to my country due to family constraints.

Can you please suggest some schools.

Waiting for your reply..

Thanks in Advance..Really appreciate your time and effort.

Though you've mentioned techno-functional, you haven't specified which xdomain you are working in (FICO, SD, MM etc).
I started off as a programmer but have been working in different modules, Finance and Distribution in various clients, in addition to programmer role.
I had set up a small company with a friend right after college and did small IT projects for local companies in Bangalore, India.
Though you've down-played this part, there could be some interesting maal-masala here as well.

If you are keen on taking the discussion offline, I'd be interested to hear about how that went. Why was it folded up? How did it influence your subsequent career decisions? etc etc.
I did it only for a few months, and had to fold it up due to some personal loss of my partner. I am not sure whether to add it or not, as I do not have substantial documentation related to that. Also, it may become a negative image that I could not could not continue the business alone, after my partner had to leave.
Interested in Strategy and Decision Making as well as General Management. Long term goal is to get into Entrepreneurship.
Need to tread a little carefully here. Would you get into a General Management role in the natural course of time? How does the MBA fit in here?
INSEAD (both Singapore and France)
Nanyang- Singapore
NUS, Singapore
AGSM, Australia.
IIM
ISB
Decent mix. But you've completed left out 2 big regions (Europe, US - the former being a better fit) and a 3rd smaller one (Canada). Reasons?

While you are making your school choice Asia-friendly (I'm guessing this has more to the state of the economy than anything else), you might also want to diversiy into other regions.
I have added Oxford,Cambridge (UK), Emory 1 year course, Kellogs(US), Rotman, Ivey (Canada) now to the mix. Does that make too many applications ?
I believe US schools look for younger candidates. Do you suggest any particular US schools considering my age?

Raptor,

When you are applying to schools like Wharton, Tuck et al, the basic information that you've shared about yourself doesn't tell me anything more than the fact that you belong to the IT/Male/Engineer pool working as an ERP consultant with a GMAT score that's typical of this pool.

Leaves the field wide open for the reader to make pre-conceived notions about the general applicant who comes in with a similar profile. And you don't want that.

In your apps, you'd have go WAY beyond the job description.

When you start working on your apps, dig into those 4 years and bring out impactful stuff and whatever you have, try to present that in a way that'll grab the readers attention...even if the reader has read 100 similar profiles before yours.

No, I personally don't do non-MBA profile evaluations. We do help out with the application part, though i.e. SoP, essays, etc.

But there's someone else who provides excellent (and free) inputs on non-MBA options. Drop me an email and I'll direct you to him.

3 years (36 months) of full time work experience as a Software Engineer in Infosys.

1 year of full time experience so far (2 years by the time I join) managing our family business, an open air restaurant...

Aah...a (former) IT professional with a difference!

...an exclusive veg/non veg restaurant, a gaming arena for kids, a ice cream/juice shop and 2 party halls making an overall revenue of 3.5 crore a year.

Ek sher arz hai.
Aap aaye hamare thread par, khuda ki kudrat hai,
Kabhi hum aapko, kabhi aapke bank balance ko dekhte hain!

Damn! And you want to leave that to pursue a regular job that won't pay you even a fraction of what you can expect in 2 more years?

My work involves resource allocation of 70+ employees, supervision, inventory management and organizing parties. Apart from that I try to look over the finances and had come with some new ideas/improvisations to boost our revenue.

You seem to have done far more interesting work in the last 1 year, than you did in the first 2. Lucky you.

Goals:MBA - Entrepreneurship & Consulting.

This is where it starts getting juuuust a little murky. We have 2 yrs of IT, then 2 years in the (broadly categorised) hospitality industry....and then WHAM...consulting. Important question for you to ponder about - when your fingers start hurting from counting 3.5 crores (you can see how much that number has distracted me) - How are you planning to connec the dots, sirji?

Target schools:...All these schools are good for entrepreneurship and will help me land in consulting job that's why I came up with this list.
A word of caution. Just because a school has a strong reputation in consulting doesn't mean every student has an equal shot at getting into those firms.
If you have any other schools where I will fit in, kindly suggest...where do I stand and what are my chances with my current score?

Always good to be aware of how not to select business schools.

Since I have almost two months time for apps what are the odds in going for a retake, how much should I target?

If polishing some specific weak areas can help you get a decent spike, then sure, take it. Don't ignore your application storyline (specially focussing on your transition and your post-MBA plans).

How will the adcoms consider the number of GMAT attempts ?

They won't care. They'll take the highest score.

I don't know hindi but I fairly understood what you said Sameer :) As I said earlier, its just the revenue, a family business and I am not the sole proprietor :) So I cannot take it up for another 5 years till other second generation people are ready :) There are lot of other factors to be considered as well. I can use the opportunity now to learn something.

Yes, I agree with you and this is what lead me to think about MBA very seriously.

In the past one year, I had provided many ideas and suggestions and some of them delivered the expected results. There are few problems which I faced in these two years. I have adequate leadership experience and managerial skills, but I lack in planning and organization. Most of my ideas could have turned out much better if I had better knowledge in planning/organization/marketing. An MBA focused on entrepreneurship and marketing/growth strategy would help me scale our own business to the next level, concentrating more on entertainment apart from food services and establishing ourselves in different areas. During this 1+ year of working in the family business, I met a lot of small time entrepreneurs who are managing different business, but they were lacking the similar skills mentioned above. In the internet age, majority of the marketing is through word of mouth and known trusted contacts. Even the top players in non major cities lack emarketing/telemarketing because of which it becomes difficult to scale up their businesses though they have the potential and instead diversify their businesses. So apart from the family business, I would like to start my own consulting firm, which will specifically focus on startups in execution of BPs and SMEs in scaling up their businesses to the next level concentrating more on marketing/growth and branding their products. Since I have around 5 years turn around time to return to my family business, a consulting job post MBA would equip me with necessary skills to work towards both of my goals, gain industry experience and the processes followed in the consulting industry, diversify my areas of expertise, get new contacts and meet like minded people, who share similar ideas and working along with them might be of immense help.

Yes, I get it. But 25% chances is better than 10% :)

I guess I have done at least a decent job in explaining it above. If its not convincing enough then I would come after you to help me frame it soon after my GMAT retake :)

Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

Hi,

I am currently pursuing B.Tech in Computer Science. I want to join PG in Management as soon as I complete my UG next year.
Can you tell me about PG programs that take in students with little or no work experience?

I have heard of a program called MiM offered by London Business School, London School of Economics, HEC Paris. Please tell me how it is different from the traditional MBA and what are its prospects post-MiM.
Also kindly give me some info about other similar programs. I am looking to pursue PG from one of the Top universities. I just recently gave the GMAT and scored a 720.
