2Unlike high elevations, where mosquitoes don't carry dangerous illnesses, the mosquitoes at the lower elevations of Ethiopia can carry malaria and yellow fever.

(A) Unlike high elevations, where mosquitoes don't carry dangerous illnesses, the mosquitoes at the lower elevations of Ethiopia

(B) Unlike the dangerous illneses not carried by mosquitoes at the higher elevations of Ethiopia, the mosquitoes at the lower elevations of Ethiopia

(C) At the high elevations of Ethiopia, mosquitoes don't carry dangerous illnesses, but at the low elevations of Ethiopia, mosquitoes

(D) Unlike those of the high elevations, where mosquitoes don't carry serious illnesses, many lower elevation mosquitoes

(E) In comparison with the high elevations, whose mosquitoes don't carry serious illnesses, the mosquitoes in the lower elevations of Ethiopia

C is the best answer... rest all can be eliminated because of parallelism and comparison issues

E incorrectly compares high elevations to mosquitoes

D has problem with ||

B incorrectly compares 'illness' with mosquitoes + passive voice

A has problem with ||

IMO- C is the correct answer

You are correct the OA is C.

Correct answer: (C)

Solution: Answer (C) is correct because it corrects the Equivalent Elements error in the original sentence, which compares high elevations to mosquitoes at lower elevations. (C) uses two independent clauses joined by a conjunction ("but") to make the comparison between mosquitoes at high elevation and mosquitoes at low elevation clear and logical. Answer (B) is incorrect because it maintains the Equivalent Elements error, comparing dangerous illnesses to mosquitoes. Answer (D) is incorrect because it compares high elevations to mosquitoes. Answer (E) also contains a problematic comparison because it relates high elevations to mosquitoes.

I have selected D.

I assumed that the 'those' in the option B refers to mosquitoes and thus makes the parallelism.
Can you please explain?

Hi missionGMAT007,

You should almost never assume on SC questions- instead, try to identify whether it is clear to which word does the personal pronoun refer to. In some cases, a personal pronoun can refer to two words- therefore, be suspicious about that answer choice and keep it as a 'looser'. Then, go on and search for the 'contender'.

In the SC problem we have discussed before, the word "those" does not have a clear antecedent. Ask yourself, is it clear to whom 'those' refers to?

Even if you assume that 'those' refers to the 'mosquitoes' (which you should almost never do, but anyway) you can also see a problem with parallelism- "those of high elevations" and "lower elevation mosquitoes".

Hi DanaJ Thanks for posting such nice questions for practice . It would be helpful if you mention the source with the question.This way i will be able to avoid doing GMATPREP and MGMAT CAT questions as i am a man of limited means and cant afford to buy lots of materials.
