Take a look at the meaning the sentence is trying to convey. Biological traits would be a product of natural selection if they had which property? The property of enhancing reproduction or survival. i.e. the answer to the question "What are responsible for the enhancement of reproduction or survival?" would be "biological traits".

In answer choice E, a clear reference that 'biological traits' enhance reproduction/survival is not evident. D fixes this issue through the use of 'they enhance'.
