as vs after / when

by dhirajdas53 » Fri Apr 19, 2013 11:48 pm
The princess entered the spectacularly arranged ballroon as a well-practiced band paid
her a musical tribute

The princess entered the spectacularly arranged ballroon after/when a well-practiced band paid
her a musical tribute.

Sentence 1 is correct as per Manhattan Can anyone help me explain what will be the difference in meaning if I replace "as" with "after/when".

Thanks in advance

The princess entered the spectacularly arranged ballroom as a well-practiced band paid
her a musical tribute.

This means that the two events - the princess' entry and the musical tribute - are happening simultaneously.

The princess entered the spectacularly arranged ballroom when a well-practiced band paid
her a musical tribute

Here, there is a sequence of events: the princess entered the ballroom; then the band paid a musical tribute.

The princess entered the spectacularly arranged ballroom after a well-practiced band paid
her a musical tribute

Here too, there is an event sequence: the band paid a musical tribute; then the princess entered the ballroom.

Hope the differences are clear.
