Jet Engine

by reachac » Mon Jul 14, 2008 10:32 pm
After more than four decades of research and development, a new type of jet engine is being tested that could eventually propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help boost cargoes into space at significantly lower costs than current methods permit.

A. tested that could eventually propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help
B. tested that could eventually have the capability of propelling aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or to help
C. tested, eventually able to propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours, or helping
D. tested, and it eventually could propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or helping
E. tested, and it could eventually have the capability to propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help

I am confused between 'A' and 'E' .

In choice 'A' i am confused about "that" whether it refers to tested or jet engine.

In choice 'E' it could eventually have the capability seems wordy !!

Let me go with "A" here as it looks concise.

Let us know the ans with explanation.

IMO, wordiness is still better than modifier confusion.

I'd pick E.

Eliminate B, C, and D due to improper parallelism of the verbs (propell/propelling vs help/helping).

i think the correct answer is A.

tested that could eventually propel aircraft anywhere in the world within two hours or help

Here that is used correctively in a restrictive sense.

I thinks it is a parallelism in disguise.

could propel or (could) help....

So IMO it is A

OA please.

usage of modifier

I will go with A.

that clearly uses restrictive clause here in A.

E looks correct but wordy.

We can rule out E because "it" can refer to engine or research and developement.

Ok Ranuekk, well I got it wrong the first time, I had selected A as well!

The mistake A does "that" is misplaced. It appears in A, The fact that the new engine is being tested itself gaurantees the propelling and stuff(resta sentence). Whereas the engine shall do the propleeing or help.

Got it? If not I suggest reading A agian and again till the ambiguity appears

I beleive that "capability" is the key word here. It's not the test engines themselves that will help boost the carogoes, but it's capability will help do so. That's my reasoning apart from the other fact that, "to propel and (to) help" are more parallel than in A. Also, the usage of "that" again stumped me, I'm also not sure if "that" is appropriate in A, may be someone can throw some light on it.

Anyone else think of any other obvious reasons.
