Question 1: While Jackie Robinson was a Brooklyn Dodger, his courage in the face of physical threats and verbal attacks was not unlike that of Rosa Parks, who refused to move to the back of a bus in Montgomery, Alabama.

(A) not unlike that of Rosa Parks, who refused
(B) not unlike Rosa Parks, who refused
(C) like (Rosa Parks and her refusal
(D) like that of Rosa Parks for refusing
(E) as that of Rosa Parks, who refused

CORRECT ANSWER IS A.
I am confused between A and E. I thought we are comparing courage ('as' phrase) here not the person ('like' phrase).

Question 2: According to a recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, like that of earlier generations.

(A) like that of earlier generations
(B) as that for earlier generations
(C) just as earlier generations did
(D) as have earlier generations
(E) as it was of earlier generations

CORRECT ANSWER: E
Here also in the argument I thought we are comparing goals not adults.

Could anyone please tell me as to what is being compared in the two questions above and justify for 'as' vs 'like'. Thanks!

The skeleton of the sentence:

His courage was not unlike that of Rosa Parks.

Courage has been compared with courage. The original sentence is correct because it has avoided all the possible errors.

First: Courage may be compared with man.

B and C have done this.

D has made an error by using "for refusing". It has changed the intended meaning of the sentence.

"as that of" in E is incorrect.

Answer is A.

Question 2: According to a recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, like that of earlier generations.

(A) like that of earlier generations
(B) as that for earlier generations
(C) just as earlier generations did
(D) as have earlier generations
(E) as it was of earlier generations

As is used to compare two clauses. We can at first time apply this. Then we can go for other errors.

As + Subject + verb should be correct option. A, B, and D are out for not having "subject + verb" after "AS".

"did" in B is not parallel with "is".

Answer is E.

Thanks a lot for vivid explanation. Actually I initially thought of 'courage' as a clause instead of noun and got confused and posted these doubt. Thank anyways!

Someone has doubt on the use of "it".

Let
owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land =X

Then read the sentence:

X is a goal of majority of young adults, as it was of earlier generations.

-> Here, it refers to "X" for the following reasons:

1. Both X and It are the subjects of their clauses.
2. They are grammatically parallel.
3. X is singular, and it is singular.

Nope, A is not double negative.

Again it is the only option that has no error.

Thanks nazar for the explanation again. I got it; basically the difference i was looking out for is:

In the second question, "owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults" --- is a clause so we will use AS

"courage" in the first question ---- is a noun so we will use LIKE
