Seeming to be the only organization fighting for the rights of poor people in the South, Hosea Hudson, a laborer in Alabama, joined the Communist party in 1931.

(A) Seeming to be
(B) As
(C) In that they seemed
(D) Since it seemed
(E) Because it seemed to be

To me the best option looks A, though not very convinced. What do you guys think?

I think I remember an old English teaching telling me that a sentence never starts with 'Because'

I picked D, although I was not able to find a reason to eliminate A.

Sentences do start with "because" in GMAT

Mankey - What is the source of this question? Even if E is the correct answer - the whole sentence looks awkward to me.

the only organization fighting for the rights of poor people in the South -- after the comma we need the name of the organization, don't we?

Hosea Hudson - is a name of a person.

Don't you think the usage "Because it seemed to be" is awkward ? what is 'it' referring to?
