Rather than is preferable to Instead of.

Hence,D

Hi,
Using 'rather than accept' we cannot eliminate A. So, A and D remain.
We can eliminate A because 'whether' should be used in place of 'if'.
Cheers!

You CAN eliminate A based on Rather than Accept,

Rather than accept...., Columbus (action here: must be one that is not conforming ---->> can only be a form of travel)

It cannot be
Rather than accept...., Columbus was sent by A and B; the preferred form would be :
Rather than accept..., A and B sent Columbus.

Another approach to this problem is "whether" is preferred to "if" when the question involves a possibility of a Yes or No, leaving C and D.

OA is D
My understanding why OA is D
1)Accept is parallel to sailed and both are working verb.
2)We need to choose WHETHER over IF, because no conditions are involved here. Its just a case to chek whether or not X is true.
3) Having Been is correct because it represents the completed action, which is in the past of the past action SAILED.

Please guide if I am wrong anywhere or If i am missing anything.

Thanks
