known TO BE
known AS
both are CORRECT
first pick the modifier issue of Mars--modified by what/whom?
you can eliminate BC
D & E have wrong IDIOM

Being cold, dark..... error, so eliminate B,C E
We are left with A D

(D) venture again to Mars, a planet that is known now to be so D is out

(A) again venture to Mars, a planet now known to be : sounds the best answer, though ..'earth venture again' in D sounds better than 'earth again venture' in A

I think all the versions of known are correct. I am not sure about GMAT english. We cannot just eliminate being as wordy because GMAT do have questions with being as the answers.

This is how I eliminate the answers -

(A) again venture to Mars, a planet now known to be

(B) venture to Mars again, a planet now known for being
"again" is an adverb and should modify venture (verb).

(C) will venture to Mars again, a planet now known as being

Will" in C and E brings in certainty but main clause has a "may be"

(D) venture again to Mars, a planet that is known now to be
Modifier and wrong usage

(E) will again venture to Mars, a planet now known as being ..Same as C.
