C is the right answer by process of elimination.

A) is wrong because the sentence is so awkward("indicative his").Also "this" is used to modify an action("holding a virtue").This is wrong

B) is wrong because of its use of "T0".To is use to imply intent.The orginal sentence doesn't impy intention.Never encourage unnecessary shift in the meaning of the orginal sentence unless the orginal sentence is non sensical.

D) is wrong because is uses a wrong verb "holds" along with the auxillary verb "Can".Auxillary verbs such as can,could,should,would,will,shall will always take a plural verb.

E) is wrong because of the usage of present participle construction.It is used to convery a simultaneous action.Again this is not the intended meaning of the sentence.

Leaving only "C" a better answer among all.
