B. by using the companies' earnings and by profiting
C. using the companies' earnings and profiting
D. with the company's earnings, profiting
E. with the companies' earnings and to profit
IMO E

first of all notice companies in the non-underlined part..so its companies whose earnings used to pay of the debt NOT company...hence choices A, D,out as it should be companies'...
Now to pay off is || to profit in op E...also u can rephrase as hoping to pay off is parallel to hoping to profit...hence E
