New York is known for its Adirondack Park,
that still has expansive forests of deciduous and coniferous trees, and where such forests house a number of endangered animal species.
What is the meaning of the sentence:
- New York is known for ABC park.
This park has big forests of certain types of trees
In this park, these forests house many endangered species
What are the errors in this sentence
1: Not Parallel - that ..., and where...- These two clauses must begin with same relative pronoun since both the clauses point to same noun (Adirondack Park).
Typically {,that} is not the correct usage but I do not think that GMAT will eliminate a choice solely based on this error.
Now we
perform process of elimination. We will eliminate all choices that have parallelism error. Choices A and C eliminated.
A
that still has expansive forests of deciduous and coniferous trees, and where
Eliminated due to Parallelism Error
B
which still has expansive forests of deciduous and coniferous trees;
Incorrect. This choice changes the intended meaning. Notice that the non-underlined clause states as an independent fact that such forests house the endangered species. Whereas the intended meaning is that such forests IN the Adirondack PARK house endangered species. Notice the subtle difference in the meaning.
Grammatically, I do not think that this is not incorrect because park may be referred to using "which".
C
which still has expansive forests of deciduous and coniferous trees, where
Eliminated due to Parallelism Error
D
where still expansive forests of deciduous and coniferous trees, and
Incorrect. This choice has punctuation error in that the list is not connected appropriately. Two subjects are joined with comma and. This is incorrect since a list containing two elements (if they are not clauses) should be connected using a conjunction without a comma.
"where subject 1, and subject 2 verb"
In addition, the SV do not make sense together, and infact this sentence distorts the intended meaning. The sentence now implies - forests of x and y trees and such forests house endangered species.
E
where there are still expansive forests of deciduous and coniferous trees, and where
Correct Choice.
