whenever you see "such as" and "like", choose meaning require what. here meaning require "such as"

majored and having majored are wrong with tence

correct A is B

The OA here says B, which is

who major in such specialized areas as finance and marketing are becoming more and more


Here, wouldn't 'majoring' be better? (because this too is an ongoing action, just like the students becoming successful)
majoring would be parallel to becoming?

It would then become

majoring in such specialized areas as finance and marketing are becoming more and more

And when put into the sentence would read

As business grows more complex, students majoring in such specialized areas as finance and marketing are becoming more and more successful in the job market.

Kindly help.

Can someone please explain me why C is incorrect, isnt example given here.

Hi veenu08,

There are two issues with answer C:

1) The words "those of" is redundant/unnecessary
2) The phrase "are being increasingly" is clunky

-> sentence is an unfolding event , "as a happens, b happens"
as "grows" is in present tense, we need present tense in second clause to make it parallel and perfect or past tense are incorrect.
-> when we describe example we use such as not like
-> finance and marketing are themselves specialized areas so "those of areas of finance" is wrong
-> becoming is preferred over being to describe unfolding event but are bring is not incorrect.

(A) majoring in specialized areas like those of finance and marketing have been becoming increasingly
(B) who major in such specialized areas as finance and marketing are becoming more and more
(C) who majored in specialized areas such as those of finance and marketing are being increasingly
the sentence talks about students. since students are still in school -- otherwise they would be graduates, not students -- it's inappropriate to say "majored" in the past tense
(D) who major in specialized areas like those of finance and marketing have been becoming more and more
(E) having majored in such specialized areas as finance and marketing are being increasingly

The stimulus talks of specialized areas and those areas should be described as 'areas such as' or 'such areas as'. Use of 'like' is wrong to denote examples; it is usable only for comparisons. So A and D are out.
Among B, C and E:
C is wrong in using past tense 'who majored', because use of past tense implies that success belongs only to those who majored in the past and not relevant to present day majors.
E by using the perfect tense limits the success to those who have majored in the past until now and excludes the likely entrants in the present and in the future.
B conveys the idea that popularity of those students is increasing day by day. 'As business grows' indicates an on-going process; the second leg maintains parallelism by saying 'are becoming successful...'
