Contrary to the scholarly wisdom of the 1950's and early 1960's that predicted the processes of modernization and rationalization would gradually undermine it, ethnicity is a worldwide phenomenon of increasing importance.

This SC is based on a few standard grammar rules:

1) Verbs: Future events (in this case, predicted future events) require the verb "will" or "would." Eliminate B, D and E.

2) Pronoun/Noun agreement: the noun "ethnicity" is singular, so the proper pronoun would be "it"
**Note: it's common for a pronoun to follow the noun that it represents; however, this sentence uses a modifying phrase (notice the "it" followed by a comma), which means that the noun can come after the comma.** Eliminate C
