At Shiprock, New Mexico, a perennially powerful girls’ high school basketball team has become a path to college for some and a source of pride for a community where the household incomes of 49 percent of them are below the poverty level.
(A) where the household incomes of 49 percent of them are
(B) where they have 49 percent of the household incomes
(C) where 49 percent of the household incomes are
(D) which has 49 percent of the household incomes
(E) in which 49 percent of them have household incomes
why the choice d is wrong?
Choice D doesn't really make sense idiomatically. I would go with choice C instead. A community doesn't really HAVE a set of incomes.. you would say that the individual houses have incomes.
Have you wondered how you could have found such a treasure? -T
The choice D would have been correct, had it started with a comma, i.e. ',which has 49 percent of the household incomes' or 'that has 49 percent of the household incomes' instead of 'which has 49 percent of the household incomes'.real2008 wrote:At Shiprock, New Mexico, a perennially powerful girls’ high school basketball team has become a path to college for some and a source of pride for a community where the household incomes of 49 percent of them are below the poverty level.

IMO D
A,B,C where refers to the community which I think is wrong.
in E 'them' is ambiguous
