Sulfur dioxide, a major contributor to acid rain, is an especially serious pollutant because
it diminishes the respiratory system's ability to deal
with all other pollutants.

A. an especially serious pollutant because it diminishes the respiratory system's
ability to deal

B. an especially serious pollutant because of diminishing the respiratory system's
capability of dealing

C. an especially serious pollutant because it diminishes the capability of the
respiratory system in dealing

D. a specially serious pollutant because it diminishes the capability of the respiratory
system to deal

E. a specially serious pollutant because of diminishing the respiratory system's
ability to deal

Was between A and D. Please explain which is better.

The word especially emphasizes how serious the pollutant is

In D, the word specially alters the meaning by suggesting that the pollutant is special in a way. Also
'diminishing the capability of' is unidiomatic

article is fine mate, 'a specially' doesn't need 'an'. But A and D both gives similar meaning. Though we know A is right D is tempting to me. Any strong reason with which we can eliminate D ?

Between A and D i will go with A because:
1) we need "especially" becuase we want to highlight that fact..
2) since this is a FACT it should be in Simple Present..."it DIMINISHES"...

diminishes is an intransitive verb so an infinitive "to deal" is correct
