Topic :
The most effective business leaders are those who maintain the highest ethical standard.
Response :
While the issue of whether or not the most effective business leaders are those who maintain the highest ethical standard, is a contentious one and needs to be addressed.
While each side has its strengths and weaknesses, I firmly believe that ethics and business go hand-in-hand. One cannot survive without the other.
Firstly, business leaders of today are living in a fiercely competitive world, where there is no scope to commit a mistake. Business today is all about mergers and acquisitions and each company has to establish a code of ethics in doing so. Furthermore, by ensuring the ethics of the business dealings, leaders motivate their employees to stick with the organization.
For example, business leaders such as Richard Branson, incorporate ethics into their business, engage in charity work and reap huge profits as well.
Hence, they are paving the path for ethical business.
Secondly, when leaders market this image of themselves, they garner positive publicity for their business. Consumers, investors, and stakeholders are impressed with the social consciousness of the business leaders. But, ethics alone cannot take the business forward. Through strategizing, business leaders are able to take their business to the next level because of the wide reach that they have acquired.
Some may argue that this image of being ethical in business, is a false one and cannot sustain for long. Eventually, people will realize that companies are not what they claim to be. This point is flawed because leaders understand that their business is under constant scrutiny and they cannot afford to take the risk of bringing it down. Thus, they maintain a certain code of ethics.
For example, business leader Laxmi Mittal, might not be ethical in all his personal dealings, but in order to effectively ensure the success of his business, he has to maintain the highest standard for ethics in his professional space.
In conclusion, the most effective business leaders carry the people's trust on their shoulders and thus they are the ones who maintain the highest set of ethical standards.
