A GMAT AWA practice essay

Topic - "Over time, the costs of processing go down because as organizations learn to do things better, they become more efficient. In color film processing, for example, the cost of a 3-by-5-inch print fell from 50 cents for five -day service in 1970 to 20 cents for one-day service in 1984. The same principle applies to the processing of food. And since Olympic Foods will soon celebrate its 25th birthday, we can expect that our long experience will enable us to minimize costs and thus maximize profits."

Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.

According to the passage, costs of processing decline and the organizations or the people associated with them see the faces of profit in their work. Processing does not start with that, whether it is a film or a food, the beginning of processing is with the basic idea. But the passage is not about that, it is about the physical aspect of this thing and according to what we have heard that 'practice makes perfect'. Thus it can be said that 'processing' is a type of example of this saying.

It is said here that 'in overtime, the costs of processing go down as organization learn how to do things better, they become more efficient'. This is absolutely true in almost all cases we see in everyday life, personally or professionally. A kid is given some exercises to do in home by his or her teacher of school. As seen in all cases, these exercises seem very tough and 'out of this world' to the kid in first instance. But as days go by, such exercises are enjoyed by the same kid who had hated it first. Even while doing a new recipe in kitchen and going through the teacher's explanations in driving practice, the first time is always a challenging one. After passing this phase, everything comes in place, more or less.

It is quite logically sound. As said time do matter a lot, in most of the cases. For example, a 5 year old kid cannot match the knowledge in mathematics of a 15 year old kid. Here the practice of ten years plus the brain development in these ten years matter almost equally. Thus true processing does not need just practice or to do it repeatedly but also it also need time when this practice will go on.

Then again, there are matters when this may not come true. We do such chances to see a new film processing but even though it is done through the latest technology, it fails to get the attention of viewers. Thus, making things better is not enough; it's about making things efficient to work! According to what is being said about Olympic foods, until and unless it is done efficiently, it may dampen our spirits. Only long experience only will not reap 'sweet fruits', it's the blend of perfection and experience do matter and give out really 'sweet fruits'
