ESSAY QUESTION:
"The purpose of government is not to ensure the financial well-being of its citizens, but rather to maintain order."

From your perspective, how accurate is the above statement? Support your position with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

RESPONSE:
The purpose of the government is definitely to maintain order within the country but it also has a very important function of providing financial well-being of its citizens. Therefore, I stand against the argument provided by the author.

The purpose of any government is the overall well-being of its citizens. This includes the well-being of the citizen in terms of his finances, health, education, law and order and all other sectors. For the same purpose, we see that the government has many wings to take care of various sectors. In India, we have the finance ministry for financial well-being, agriculture ministry for the farmers, home ministry for internal affairs, health ministry for improvement in the healthcare and various other ministries. Each ministry takes care of its sector and all these together constitute the government.

The financial well-being of the citizen becomes more important when we evaluate the success of any government. While the development in some sectors might be difficult to judge, it is comparatively easier to judge the financial implications of a government's decision. Also, these decisions have a direct impact on the income of any individual and that is the most important thing for an individual. If the government reduced the income tax percentages for all tax slabs, most people will take an increased income to their homes. It makes the citizens happy and it is likely that they will vote for the same government in the subsequent elections. Also, it is the function of the government to create more jobs and remove unemployment. The government also brings schemes to raise the income of those earning less in order to provide a better quality of life to all the citizens of its country. So, we see that the financial well-being of its citizens is a very important function of the government.

All would agree that a major purpose of the government is the development of a nation. Nowadays, the development of major developing nations is made in terms of the Gross Domestic Product or GDP. This GDP directly projects the financial well-being of a nation and as such of its citizens. It is important for the government to obtain good GDP. It shows the progress of a nation.

People may say that order is the most important purpose of a government. I agree that it may be the most important but it is not the only one.Order cannot be maintained in a country with poor, hungry and illiterate citizens. If the citizens are financially well off, it is more likely that there will be law and order in the country.

In conclusion, order is important in a country but so is financial progress. The government is judged by the financial well being of its citizens and it is thus a very important purpose of the government.
