ESSAY QUESTION:
An author once wrote that “The invention of the telephone prevents us from appreciating the distance between us.” Today this is even more true as the rise of the Internet has enabled inexpensive global communication.

MY RESPONSE:
Speaker states that certain inventions has enabled inexpensive global communication and thereby preventing us from appreciating the distance between us. To a considerable extent, I agree to the point that today's communication has reduced the distance between us. However, speaker seems to suggest that these inventions are completely preventing us from appreciating the distance between the communicators. I will discuss below both the scenarios.

It is true to say that technological advancements in communication play a vital role in making our planet a global village. Today's technology is acting as a catalyst for furthering communication channels. Someone from China can have a virtual meeting with someone from America via eConference, eMeetings etc. Further, internet has facilitated many employees to work from home and thereby reduce travel time. It is unimaginable to think of a day without internet. In my opinion, global communication would stand still.

However, it is important to note that people do have to travel whenever situations demand. In order to be effecient, certain meetings must be conducted face to face. For example, if an American company faces a production failure at a manufacturing plant in Africa, the production engineer will prefer to be at the plant. Further, a Deloitte Global CEO having a meeting with the CEOs of each region would prefer to have a face to face meeting rather than an eMeeting. In such cases, distance will a determining criteria.

In sum, in my opinion, the advent of internet has definitely prevented us from appreciating the distance between us in most instances. However, at times, if not many, people do consider distance a determining factor.
