"The best way to give advice to other people is to find out what they want and then advise them how to attain it."

The author of this topic suggests that the best way to help others is to find out what they want and tell them how to fulfill their needs. I cannot agree with this statement as its argument and conclusion are both flawed. Inspiring a person to strategically solve a problem is more important than giving him the solution to a problem.

First of all, mental development is crucial to everyone. One who works strictly without consider the reasoning behind the action cannot improve his way of thinking. It is very difficult for such person to solve a similar problem in the future if he does not acquire the skills with understanding, let lone the scenario when he faces a more difficult problem. For example, math teachers will not always show you all the steps but they will give you some hints at a time.

Moreover, it is important for one to make decision and take initiatives on their own action. We as the instructor should not always find out what a learner want, but let the learner discover knowledge and skills that suit him most. A university officer is not likely to tell a student which career path he should choose, but the officer would rather highlight the difficulties and opportunities a student may encounter in the future.

Last but not least, it is very ineffective to find out everyone's need and talk to them one by one. A better way to help people is to work hard and let us be their role model. Mr. Wong, a successful businessman who works as a columnist in Hong Kong metro, writes article on how to become successful, yet he does not target on any individual. He sets a very good example on how to help others as he tells us the challenges he have faced.

In summary, it is obvious that the author’s claim is not justifiable. While I acknowledge that giving advices can have others to achieve their goal, I would contend that the learner should be the one to find out what they want. We should emphasize not only on problem solving, but also the process of learning.
