Although the redevelopment proposal for the blighted inner-city neighborhood has prompted criticism from senior citizens, advocates of low and middle-income housing, and community residents fearful of inconvenience or even displacement, it promises to create not only a number of upscale apartment buildings but also numerous construction jobs as well.
Discuss the issue being considered and its implications. Develop an argument advocating whether or not the redevelopment proposal is a good idea. Explain your position using relevant reasons or examples drawn from your own experience, observations, or reading.
The issue of redevelopment of the inner-city has rightly been criticized by people.Although redevelopment will create new jobs and upscale apartment but they are not good enough reason to cause inconvenience to people already living in the area as the impact of redevelopment is much more.
When people decide to invest in a house by either purchasing it or renting it, they consider lot of factors like proximity to their offices, schools for children, property rates , future development plans of the area etc. Redevelopment of the area will cause people to move to a new area and they will have to go through this entire process again which is inconvenient for people specially the senior citizens . Also, it may not be possible for people from low and middle -income housing to afford a place to live in other areas.
Moreover, some people may choose to continue stay in the area being redeveloped. The day to day life of these people will be affected as the construction may cause road blocks, noise etc. This may seriously affect the preparation of children during examinations. Construction work for redevelopment will take years to complete so this will not be a short term problem for the community residents.Upscale apartment buildings will be good for the area but will cater to only a certain section of the society as people from low and middle income groups will not be a able to afford them.
On the whole redevelopment proposal should not be implemented as it is illogical to expect people to relocate or face inconvenience for years till the development finishes. Instead construction of upscale apartment buildings should be shifted to a uninhabited area. This will solve the problem of construction jobs as well as provide peace to the residents of the area.
