Simple order of opperation

by cmr209 » Wed Sep 02, 2009 11:41 am
Simple yet confused.

So the question: 3(5 - 2^2) + 4^2
is showing the correct answer to be = 19, however, I disagree I get the answer to be 43.

Using PEMDAS, obviously, I take the - 2^2 as being -2*-2 thus = 4.

3(5+4) + 16

3(9) + 16

27 + 16 =43

Is my logic incorrect?

Nevermind I now see my logic is incorrect.

I need to review my algebra principles.

In this case the minus sign doesn't apply to the base of the exponent.
