Verbal strategy

by Ysabelle » Mon Jul 15, 2013 9:52 pm
Hello everyone,

I have a question for our experts. When reviewing the number of errors I did on my last GMAT prep verbal, I noticed the following (Score 41, 92% percentile)
-Sentence Correction: 8 errors
-Reading comprehension: 2 errors
-Critical reasoning: 1 error

Can I assume that if I want to increase my score, I should focus primarily on sentence correction? I know the breakup between categories is supposed to be pretty close, so I'm assuming I'm just weaker in SC (rather than maybe the Gmat throwing really hard SC questions at me)?

Thanks!

Hi Ysabelle,

If you earned a Verbal Scaled Score of 41, then you performed at a very high level and the test likely adapted to you and threw you harder material overall. This likely resulted in some harder SCs than average. That having been said, these results clearly show that SCs were the one verbal category that you didn't nail. What was your overall score for this exam though (and how did you do in the Quant?)? While there are some SC points that you didn't earn, your performance on the Verbal is better than most Test Takers will ever achieve on the GMAT, so your real "missing points" likely would be found in the Quant.

Thanks for the reply Rich.

I scored 44 on the Quant (66th percentile) for an overall score of 700.

I'm focusing 95% on the quant but I do want to get a little bit of verbal in. So I will focuse on SC then :)

Thanks

Hi Ysabelle,

The Quant 44 means that you're pretty solid when it comes to straight "math" concepts. How are you doing on Data Sufficiency? With your score, that could be one of the likely areas in which you're losing out on some points (although I'd need more information to be sure).
